“Dr Riek Machar today arrived in Juba. That is a sign of commitment to peace. This evening our meeting concentrated on security arrangements because it is one of the fundamental provisions of this agreement and we deliberated on how we can fast-track so that the necessary forces of 83,000 will be realized before 11th November. Yes, we do have challenges, and we pray we overcome those challenges.”

“We confirm to you that this is was a fruitful good meeting. We have discussed all the terms of the Agreement, specially the Security Framework. And we agreed completely on all details. We have heard statement from both leaders; the President and Dr. Machar have personally overlooked all the work done in the Security Committees and we have produced a well-received report. We confirm to South Sudan citizen that the peace [process] is going very well and, by November, everything that we agreed will be implemented on a timely manner.”

STORYLINE
The leader of the Sudan’s People Liberation Movement in Opposition (SPLA-IO), Riek Machar, today (9 Sep) met with South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir in the country’s capital Juba, in a move described as a commitment to peace.

Machar arrived late morning to a red-carpet welcome aboard the same flight with a delegation from Sudan’s governing Council, and opposition from Sudan.

The early evening closed-door meeting comes as deadline of the extended Pre-transitional period of 12 November is soon approaching and the partiers are expected to form Revitalized Government of National Unity.

The long-awaited face-to-face meeting saw the two leaders warmly acknowledging each other before the start of the meeting.

Present at the meeting were various representatives of the opposition and the government.
